Chapter 529 An Ambush In A Foreign Land

The truck was rapidly closing in on Cedrick and Gwendolyn’s cab, leaving them with little time to
formulate a plan.

The cab doors and windows were locked, and the driver was frantically swerving the streets to avoid a
collision with the truck.

Right in the nick of time, Cedrick raised his laptop and slammed it against the passenger side window.
The sound of glass shattering stung their ears.

Cedrick turned around, intending to switch seats with Gwendolyn so she could jump out of the moving
cab first.

She rejected his offer and urged. “We’re running out of time. Go. I’ll come right after you.”

The truck was seconds away from ramming into the cab. Cedrick promptly jumped out of the cab,
rolling several times across the ground before coming to a stop on the side of the road.

He was followed closely by Gwendolyn.

Bang!

The truck crashed into the cab barely a second after Gwendolyn made her escape, filling the air with
ear- splitting noise.

Inertia caused the truck to continue speeding after its collision, and it was headed straight for
Gwendolyn

She nimbly jumped out of the way, and the truck was finally forced to a stop when it collided with a
roadside wall.

The unfortunate cab driver did not have the guts to jump out of his car and ended up in a pool of his
own blood.

Cedrick immediately checked Gwendolyn for injuries. She shook her head and said reassuringly, “Don’t
worry. I’m fine.”

They stood on the roadside, ascertaining the severity of the accident and digesting their close brush
with death.

Cedrick quickly dialed Neal’s number and said, “My wife and I were ambushed in a car chase on our
way to the airport. I’m sending you my coordinates. Get your men here as soon as possible.”

He was about to send Neal their location coordinates after their call when the swing doors of the truck
opened. A group of masked, bat-wielding men jumped out of the vehicle and walked toward the couple
menacingly.

A fight soon broke out, with Cedrick and Gwendolyn going up against forty men.

The situation was rather chaotic but was nothing new for the couple.

Nonetheless, their enemies had more manpower and appropriate weapons. Cedrick and Gwendolyn
would run out of energy as the fight dragged on.

Cedrick shielded Gwendolyn and whispered, “These men came for you. You can’t outlast them. You

An Ambush In A Foreign Land should escape first. I’ll hold them off.”

“No. We’re staying together. I will not leave you behind, Gwendolyn said resolutely.

She shook off Cedrick’s grip and deftly removed her heels, which hindered her movements. Then, she
rushed into the crowd bare-footed, wrenching a baseball bat off one of their attackers and taking on ten

men at once.

Cedrick could only join in the fray and check on her from time to time.

The brawl lasted a good five minutes, after which the streets were littered with masked men howling in.
pain.

Gwendolyn and Cedrick were far superior fighters and steadily incapacitated their enemies. They
quickly gained the upper hand in a few minutes.

Bang!

A deafening gunshot pierced the air. A stray bullet struck Gwendolyn’s elbow amid the chaos, and she
grunted as blood streamed out of the gunshot wound.

She held her elbow and fought back against the immense ache that threatened to overwhelm her body.

The injury weighed on her reaction time, and she failed to dodge a blow to the back of her head.

“Gwenny!”

Gwendolyn staggered forward and slumped into Cedrick’s body. She barely managed to remain upright
by leaning against his back.

Cedrick turned and pulled her into his arms. He shot their enemies a vicious glare and threatened,
“Don’t even dream about leaving this place alive after hurting my Gwenny.”

He looked like a predator assessing its prey with a bloodthirsty gaze.

Gwendolyn’s head was starting to spin. Her vision was turning hazy, and she found herself pressing
closer to Cedrick’s chest for support.

He wrapped Gwendolyn tightly in his arms to protect her from further shots.

Shielding Gwendolyn, fighting, and keeping a lookout for snipers at the same time proved to be an
impossible task.

The couple had lost their upper hand because of Gwendolyn’s injury.

Thankfully, the welcome blare of police sirens soon filled the air.

Neal, who waited and failed to receive Cedrick’s coordinates, quickly realized that something was off
and immediately contacted Astoria’s police force.

The masked attackers knew their baseball bats were no match for the policemen’s guns and beat a
hasty retreat.

The Astorian police promptly formed a protective barrier around Gwendolyn and Cedrick. Neal, who
had also traveled to the accident site, hurried over to check the couple’s well-being.

By then, Gwendolyn had passed out in Cedrick’s arms. Cedrick kept his gaze on her and said frostily,
“There’s a sniper somewhere, eight o’clock from where I’m facing. I’d say he’s about half a kilometer
away and using a small sniper rifle. Check the area and see if the shooter’s still around.”

“On it.”

Neal dispatched a team of officers to search for a sniper based on Cedrick’s description.

Cedrick’s eyes turned bloodshot as he stared at Gwendolyn’s injured elbow. He warned through gritted
teeth, “My wife and I ran into danger,in your territory, Neal. You owe me a detailed investigation. I want
the perpetrators brought to justice, or I’m taking things into my own hands.”

Neal nodded solemnly and promised, “Don’t worry. I will turn every stone in this investigation even
without your orders.”

An ambush in a foreign land was a matter of national importance to Astoria, given that the victims were
the head of Chanaea’s Federal Bureau of Investigation and his wife, who were visiting on official
business. A botched investigation into the attack could very well affect diplomatic relations.

An ambulance pulled up to the accident site in minutes.

“Please help Mrs. Jenson into the ambulance, Mr. Jenson. It’s imperative to examine the extent of her
injury. I will arrest your assailants and detain them at the police station. You may join their interrogation
sessions once Mrs. Jenson’s injuries are properly treated,” suggested Neal.

Cedrick nodded and quickly carried Gwendolyn into the ambulance.

The paramedics examined Gwendolyn’s gunshot wound.

The bullet was lodged deeply in Gwendolyn’s elbow, which put her in excruciating pain.

Cedrick cradled her in his arms and never let go. He was swimming in guilt and fury over his wife’s
suffering.

The bullet was lodged so deeply that its removal required forceps. A paramedic approached
Gwendolyn with an anesthesia shot.

Cedrick extended his hand and ordered, “I’ll do it.”

His hands were no longer shaky as he received the needle and skillfully administered local anesthesia
to Gwendolyn’s elbow. He tried his best to minimize her pain from the needle.

He even removed the bullet himself.

Having spent most of his life in the army, he was more experienced in dealing with gunshot wounds
than the paramedics in the ambulance

After cleaning and bandaging the gunshot wound, a doctor examined the back of Gwendolyn’s head.
which had taken a painful hit from a baseball bat carlier.

A purplish bruise had formed at the back of her head, and her pale skin only accentuated its
noticeability.

The doctor performed his examination and concluded, “There’s no external bleeding, and I don’t think
there is any nerve damage. We’ll need to do to confirm this, but all in all, I’d say it’s considered a minor
injury.”

Cedrick was hardly reassured by the doctor’s preliminary assessment. He would only be relieved after
all. the necessary scans and tests were done on Gwendolyn.

“Let’s get a move on to the hospital. I want her to get a full body checkup.”

“Yes, Mr. Jenson.”

The doctor turned away to carry out Cedrick’s orders. Meanwhile, a pallid Gwendolyn finally awoke,
catching the tail end of Cedrick’s request for a full body checkup.

She grasped Cedrick’s wrist and whispered, “That’s too much. We’ll waste a whole day doing tests in
the hospital. The doctor already said it’s a minor injury, and I’m awake. Let’s skip the hospital.”

Cedrick sighed and muttered, “If you think a full body checkup is too troublesome, what about a CT
scan on your head? There are a lot of injury-prone nerves near the back of your head. I won’t stop
worrying about your condition until the scan shows that everything is fine.”

“I understand my body best. My mind is clear, and the worst that could happen is a minor concussion.
A brain hemorrhage is impossible. I don’t want to be admitted to a hospital in Astoria. I trust Joshua
more. I’ll do the full body checkup once we’re back in Chanaea, okay?” pleaded Gwendolyn.

Her intelligible speech, lucid mind, and adamance wore Cedrick down.

“Fine. Are you still thinking about the ambush carlier, Gwenny?”

Gwendolyn nodded lightly.

She knew all the assailants were targeting her instead of Cedrick.

They even hired a sniper. Who would want my life so badly? It must be someone who hates my guts.

Gwendolyn was determined to get to the bottom of the issue, or she would never live another day in
peace.

Cedrick appeared to have guessed her thoughts. He carefully shifted her in his arms to allow her to lie
down more comfortably.

“Focus on getting some rest for now, Darling. I’ll ask the driver to head to the police station instead.”

Gwendolyn mumbled in agreement as she began drifting in and out of sleep. Cedrick’s comforting
scent quickly lulled her into a deep slumber.

About fifteen minutes later, the ambulance arrived at the police station.
