Chapter 53 Scald

The ward became quiet. Emma was a little uncomfortable.

Her heartbeat was so fast. Sean's eyes kept on her face, which made her a little afraid to look at him.

After calming down for a while, Emma sat up from the hospital bed, enduring the pain. She looked up
at Sean's newly bandaged right hand, and asked, "What happened to your hand?"

"Scald." Sean's tone was faint.

Emma took a breath. Scald had been the most tormenting skin trauma since ancient times. It hurt.

Recalling that he pulled out his right hand under her, Emma couldn't even think about how painful it
was...

Sean did not sit down. He just stood not far from the bed.

There was a brief silence between the two. The atmosphere was a bit weird.

Emma tried to find some topics, but her mind was blank. Facing a deserted person like Sean, she really
didn't know what topic would interest him.

Before Emma found out the topic, Sean spoke first, "In the future, you'd better to stay away from Joey.
If something happens, he will only make thing worse and can't help much."

Emma looked at him in surprise. She didn't understand when Sean had such a big prejudice against
Joey.

Then, Sean turned and walked towards the door.



Seeing Sean was about to leave, Emma hurriedly called Sean’s name without thinking too much.

Sean turned around and looked at her.

His eyes were deep. The emotions in his eyes made Emma unable to understand.

However, she bit the bullet and asked, "Why do you show up every time when I am in danger?"

Sean frowned and did not answer.

Emma still looked at him seriously, "Why are you so good to me? You know what happened today is
very dangerous. If it’s a big stone to hit you, it is very likely that you will die. But why did you still rush to
rescue me?"

Sean frowned deeper. He was staring at Emma. After a long time, he calmly said, "That's what I should
do..."

Emma couldn't understand. She blurted out, "Did you owe me anything?"

Sean tilted his head. He looked impatient, "No!"

Emma was stunned by his attitude. Sean turned around and opened the door of the ward.

Before leaving, he turned his head and said, "Don't call my name from now on. Call me Uncle!"

On New Year's Eve.

Ivan sat alone in the high-end duplex apartment, keeping his eyes on the watch on the coffee table.

It was a cheap mechanical watch, which was no longer worthy of his identity.

He didn't throw it away. Because it was Emma who bought it for him with a month's salary...



The host on the TV was speaking auspicious remarks that had remained unchanged for several years.
Snow began to flutter outside the house.

Ivan finished smoking a cigarette with a cold face. After the cigarette butt was put out in the ashtray, he
lowered his head for a long time and did not lift it up again.

Today was Emma's birthday. He hadn't forgotten it.

The phone lying quietly on the sofa was picked up by him again.

He dialed the phone number which was already imprinted in his mind again and again. But he could
only hear the manual service prompt of the cold machine, “The user you dialed is turned off.”

Throwing the phone aside, he took another cigarette and put it in his mouth.

The bluish white smoke was rising. Large fireworks were crackling outside the window.

Getting up from the sofa, he poured himself a glass of water and stood by the window to drink it.

The next moment, he seemed to think of something. Then he turned and walked in the direction of the
coffee table.

Putting the water cup on the coffee table, he picked up the landline phone and dialed Emma's cell
phone number.

The beep sound made his heart sink slowly. As expected...

Emma's voice rang on the other end, with a lazy tone, "Hello? This is Emma, who is it?"

Listening to the familiar voice, Ivan's mood was mixed. His anger at the beginning slowly became to
sorrow.



Emma's voice was still there, "Why don't you speak? Do you make a mistake??"

Ivan hung up the phone, his chest rising and falling violently.

He swept all the things on the coffee table to the ground, including the mechanical watch that was still
very new.

He was angry and frustrated. His depression could not vent, which made him feel uncomfortable.

An abrupt doorbell rang at the door of the living room, gradually pulling his thoughts back.

He raised his head and glanced at the clock on the wall. Then he frowned, crossed the mess, and
walked towards the door...

The appearance of Kate shocked Ivan.

"Why are you here? Are you not at home with your father on New Year's Eve?" Ivan asked calmly.

Kate smiled and brought the insulated lunch box in her hand to his eyes, "Most of the restaurants
outside are closed today. I am worried that you can't eat well by yourself, so I brought dumplings."

Ivan didn't say anything. After letting Kate in, he turned and walked into the living room first.

Kate could see that Ivan seemed to be in a bad mood today, so she did not dare to ask more, and just
followed him into the living room.

In front of the sofa, Kate stopped. She looked at the mess on the ground and asked with a puzzled
look, "What's going on here? What happened?"

"Nothing." Ivan replied faintly, squatting on the ground, and reaching out to pick the things on the
ground back to the coffee table.



Kate also hurriedly put down the insulated lunch box and squatted down to help.

However, before her hand stretched out, her gaze fell on a silver-gray watch.

She knew this watch. In order to buy this watch for Ivan, Emma sent photos from abroad, asking her if
it looked good...

Ivan picked up the watch in front of her, put it back in the watch box, and closed the lid gently.

Kate's face was a little pale. She slowly picked up the water cup, raised her head, but saw Ivan
carrying the box with the watch to the study.

When Ivan came out of the study, Kate had cleaned up the living room and was standing alone in the
kitchen, heating dumplings.

"Have you heard from Emma recently?" Kate stood in the kitchen, pretending to ask casually.

Ivan turned his head and said, "No."

Kate brought out the hot dumplings and put them on the dining table, and then helped him squeeze a
glass of pear juice, "You always cough recently. You should smoke less..."

"Hmm..." Ivan responded and picked up his chopsticks.

Kate saw that Ivan was eating deliciously, and finally smiled.

She always remembers Ivan’s preferences. He liked to eat dumplings. He did not like garlic, but he
liked to put some sugar in the dipping sauce, and he preferred to drink a glass of pear juice after a
meal. All of these were told by Emma.
