Chapter 9

Sophia smiled bitterly.

‘'Why am I suddenly so sentimental?’' she asked herself.

‘'Didn't I already know that Patrick doesn't love me?’' Sophia continued asking herself.

‘'Why am I still hurting?'’ Sophia pondered.

She was very angry with herself.She took a few deep breaths and tried sorting out her emotions.

Sophia continued to walk forward, but she was blocked by a woman.

The person who came was Adriana, and it was as if she was deliberately waiting for Sophia to come
out of the hotel.

"Patrick went to the south of the city to buy my favorite chocolates for me, so I decided to wait for him
here." She explained.

Sophia nodded, expressionless, "Oh, I'll go ahead then"

Adriana took the lead and blocked Sophia, who was about to continue forward, "Wait!"

Knowing that she couldn't escape, Sophia stood there and waited quietly for the next part.

Adriana organized her thoughts and said, "Sophia, I know that all these years, you have always cared
about Patrick's love for me.I admit that when I left him before, I didn't expect that he would marry you in
order to provoke me' "Of course, that can't be blamed on you.It could only be blamed on the fact that
we were too young at that time.Moreover, my parents always put pressure on you and your child, which
led to you leaving home for so many years.You left your sick mother alone in the country.It is inevitable
that there is resentment and hatred in your heart."



"However, so many years have passed already.Let's move on.I am a generous person, and I will not
make things difficult for you because of what happened in the past"

'So, everyone is innocent, and I am the only guilty?' Sophia asked herself.

'Was Adriana thinking that I suddenly returned to the country for another purpose?' She continued
asking in her mind.

Adriana was wrong.

Sophia was more resigned to her fate.She would never miss anything that did not belong to her.

Moreover, she could not do so.

"Sorry to interrupt you.I think you misunderstood.If not for your reminder, I would have almost forgotten
that I still have an ex-husband." Sophia told Adriana.

"So, you can rest easy.I am not that kind of woman' The Rolls-Royce slowly stopped by the side of the
road.

The two women did not even hear the rumble of the engine.

The window in the back seat lowered slowly and revealed Patrick's intense and frosty eyes.

Patrick's cold expression indicated that he heard what Sophia said.

Adriana raised her eyebrows and smiled arrogantly, "Patrick is here.Nice talking to you, Sophia"

Sophia cursed herself for being stupid.

It looked like Adriana was planning this all along.



Adriana had planned this and used Sophia's own words to express her disgust for Patrick.

By doing so, he, a patronizing person, would lose face.

She did not care that Patrick knew what she was thinking, but a person must be humbled when trapped
in a bad situation.

Everyone should have one more solution for a problem, and everything should have another way to be
solved.

He was a businessman, and the nature of a businessman was to haggle over every penny.

Sophia knew that Adriana was more inclined to learn more than her.

It was hard to protect her job before, and now it seemed even more dangerous.

She looked up and inadvertently met Patrick's eyes; there was a strange gleam in them.

His eyes were full of emotions, and warning was one of them.

After Adriana got in the car, the Rolls-Royce drove away quickly.

Then, like an arrow, it disappeared in a flash and left behind exhaust which almost choked Sophia.

She sighed and continued walking to the side of the road.

Just as she was about to stop a cab, a luxury car stopped slowly in front of her.

The man stepped out of the car elegantly.

The dim yellow light of the streetlamp cast a silhouette of a slender figure, and his straight posture
seemed to be suffused with a faint glow.



He was dressed in white and looked like a prince charming at midnight.

"Let's go; I'll drive you home."

Brandon opened the passenger door.

The Phillips and the Hill families were old friends.

Since they were very young, she and Brandon had known each other and almost grew up together.

They shared everything.

If Patrick did not come into her life, she thought she would fall in love with this man in front of her.

"No, I want to go home by myself"

She decided to return home permanently because she wanted to live a quiet life and did not want
anything to do with the people she knew in the past.

"If you want to waste time with me until dawn, go ahead” I don't mind the two of us standing outside like
this.

Brandon was very patient and leaned against the car as if he was sure she would not refuse.Sophia
was cold and sleepy, and she just wanted to curl up in bed and go to sleep.She couldn't waste his time
and hers, so she had to get in the car.

The road was quiet at midnight, and except for the traffic lights, the car almost did not stop.

Brandon and Sophia were silent.Brandon only spoke when she was out of the car.

He said dotingly, "Sophia, I have stood and waited for you for a long time.Remember that I am always
here for you"



Sophia pretended not to understand, "Drive carefully!"

Then, she immediately went inside the house.Her heart was in a mess.

Perhaps, this was destined to be another sleepless night.

Time passed quickly.

The two rest days seemed to pass by in a blink of an eye.

Early Monday morning, Sophia was called up by her mother.

"Go and dress up quickly! Pick out a dress that makes you look younger.The last time, you didn't go on
the blind date your aunt Kate arranged for you! This time, Kate said that no matter what, you have to go
on this date”

"Oh, got it!" Sophia responded dazedly.

"Let's talk when you get home tonight.It seemed that man's status is good and his attitude as well.Make
sure you get to know him well."

Her mother continued to nag.

As a result, Sophia was forced to get up, put on makeup, and wear a delicate pink dress.

Then, she was pushed out of the house by her mother.

In the past few years, her clothes were almost all black, white and gray.

It was rare for her to wear such bright colors.

For a moment, she was very uncomfortable.



She felt that everyone was gawking at her.

Perhaps because she was old, she always felt that wearing pink gave people the impression that she
was pretending to be young.

When she arrived at the company lobby, she saw Patrick in the crowd.

He was still wearing a black and exquisite handmade suit.

His powerful legs were moving with steady and sturdy steps, and wherever he went, there would be
cries of surprise from women.

When he passed by, he had one hand in his pocket, and his eyes exuded indifference and arrogance.

"Find a way to get rid of her'’ Patrick told his assistant.

Naturally, he was referring to Sophia.

Patrick instructed John, who was following behind him, with a cold and solemn voice.

"Why so sudden?" John was puzzled.

Patrick sneered, "Why are you so unhappy about it?"

Sophia also seemed to feel the coldness emitted by Patrick.

Although her heart thumped, she hoped it was not because of what happened the other night.

She did not feel less guilty until she walked to her seat.

Monday was generally the busiest day for the evaluation department.



They had meetings to review and make amendments, and the process would take at least four or five
hours.

Lianna said that the case in Sophia's hand was urgent and could not be delayed.

So, Sophia sat at her desk all morning and did not even take a break.

At one o'clock in the afternoon, she finished the last page of the case in her hand and completed it
perfectly.

Just when she was about to relax and stretch, she received a call from Samuel.

"Sophia, what's going on? The evaluation case I gave you was still unfinished"

"Is it still reflecting as unfinished?"

Sophia was flustered, "Samuel, I haven't received the notification yet.I will check and get back to you”

Samuel's demeanor had changed, his usual gentle manner was gone, and through the phone, Sophia
could feel his anger.

"Sophia, if this case is messed up, you can directly pack up and leave!" Samuel shouted.

Sophia put the phone down and thought for a bit.

There was a nagging feeling in her heart.

Patrick must have done this because what she said last night made him uncomfortable.

‘'That's right, a high and mighty person like him would definitely feel that I am against him and does not
respect him, to say the least'’ Sophia thought grimly.
